Signe Holman Obituary

Signe Holman, nee Vik, 93, of Colfax, passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2014. Signe was born February 20, 1921, in Dallas, Wisconsin to John and Tina Elise (Stoa) Vik. She recalled that living through the depression meant hard times but that her mother always put a meal on the table. Dallas Lutheran Church was at the center of her family’s daily life. She grew up “Norwegian” and enjoyed conversing with her sisters and singing the Norwegian hymns. But, she was glad that hers was the first confirmation class taught in English. In order to attend Barron high school, she lived with a local family, working for her room and board. She graduated, third in her class. Upon graduation she began working as a book keeper at the Dallas Creamery. It was there she met milk route hauler, Harold Holman. She and Harold were married November 30, 1940. She had good memories of the times spent, in Illinois and Nebraska, while Harold was in basic training and memories of the worry of the three years he spent overseas. In 1951, Harold and Signe moved to Colfax. Signe became an active member of Colfax Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school, Luther League, church dinners, Bible studies, and she loved the church women’s Circles. She did all of the bookkeeping for their businesses Harold’s Texaco and Harold’s Repair. Signe was a wonderful cook, and anyone lucky enough to have her baking-especially her cinnamon rolls – would know she had a gift in the kitchen! She enjoyed having everyone for family dinners. She loved to sew – making most of her children’s clothes and many adorable dresses for her granddaughters. She enjoyed embroidery and crocheting, especially afghans but her passion was quilt making. New babies received sunbonnet quilts, newlyweds her newest favorite design. Nothing surprised her more or made her happier than having several of her quilts win blue ribbons and grand champion prizes at the Colfax Free Fair. Following Harold’s death in 2001, Signe moved to Hudson and in 2012 to Chapel View nursing home in Hopkins. She has enjoyed reading, crosswords, the on-site beauty shop, the ladies who did her nails, Bingo, and the Sunday afternoon church services. Signe was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elise Vik; brothers, William, ohn (in infancy) and Osmund; sisters, Ellen (age 8) Tilda Anderson, Julia Halverson, and Esther Amundson; and her life-long friend and sister-in-law, Jeanette Holman. She is survived her children Sue (Dave) McCarville of Hopkins, and Brad (Erline) of Rochester; grandchildren, Jason (Katie) McCarville of Hastings, Carrie (Nick) Nelson of Champlin, Danah (Dan) O’Neil, and Courtney (Peter) Shaw of Minneapolis . Also missing her will be great grandchildren, Dylan & Tyler McCarville, Gavin Nelson, Oliver and Eleni O’Neil, and Georgia and Irene Shaw. She is also survived by her niece/like a sister Doris Ganske, sister-in-law/like a sister Phoebe Vik, God-Children Paul Scherer and Sheryl Vik Gonzalez, and many nieces and nephews whom she loved and enjoyed. Funeral services will be held at 10am on Friday, June 6, 2014, at Colfax Lutheran Church, 601 River St. in Colfax, with Pastor Les Walck officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, in Colfax.
