Ellen Geraldine Luer

Ellen Geraldine (Peterson) Luer, 82, of Colfax, passed away peacefully at Mayo Hospital in Eau Claire on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. Ellen was born to Martin and Selma (Tollefson) Peterson in the town of Grant, north of Colfax, WI on June 10, 1935. Ellen was the youngest of eight children. She attended Twin Valley elementary school, was selected as a Badger Girls State representative as a junior, and graduated from Colfax High School in 1953. On July 21, 1953, Ellen married Alfred Frederick Luer from Ridgeland, WI at the Holden Lutheran Church. Ellen stayed home to raise their five children. Together, Ellen and Alfred managed the Peterson Family Homestead Farm, raising beef cattle for 50 years. Ellen enjoyed spending time with her family playing cards, Scrabble, Boggle, Zilch, and Cribbage – beating them mercilessly. She was a great cook and baker – never letting anyone leave her house without a sweet treat. For many years, Ellen was active in the Holden Circle, the annual Lutefisk Supper and Bazaar, and the Holden fair stand. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and birdwatching. Ellen is survived by her daughters, Rhonda (Dave) Hayden of Colfax, Sandra Hazlewood of Colfax, and Nancy Luer of Eau Claire; son, Daniel (Wendy) Luer of Elk Mound; eight grandchildren, Jenney (John) Larson, Ben (Becky) Luer, Grant (Samantha) Luer, Alex (Sara) Hazlewood, Eric Hayden, Maggy Luer, Seth (Samantha) Luer and Cole Luer; two great-grandchildren, Daniel Thomas Larson and Conley Luer; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Peterson and Madeline Peterson; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Selma Peterson; husband, Alfred Luer; sons, David Luer and infant son Luer; three brothers, Clifford, Erling and Sigurd Peterson; and four sisters, Olive Marsac, Ruth Krueger, Evelyn Oleson and Sylvia Thomas; sisters-in-law, Minda Peterson Nazier and Joyce Peterson; brothers-in-law, Tom Krueger, Leroy Oleson and Richard Thomas. Ellen requested that no service be held. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Memorials may be sent to Holden Lutheran Church, PO Box 513, Colfax, WI, 54730. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to doctors, nurses and staff at Mayo Hospital.
