Mary Braaten Obituary

Mary Braaten (née Schwartz) died peacefully at the Colfax Health and Rehabilitation Center on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, in Colfax, WI at the age of 98. Mary was born on January 12, 1921, to Joseph and Barbara (Borofka) Schwartz. She married Marvin Braaten in 1939. Together they raised four boys. Mary moved back to Colfax with her boys after Marvin’s tragic death in 1956. She began working for Fennie’s Meat Plant as a packager for over 20 years. Mary was accomplished at crocheting and often shared her work with her family. She was a witty individual who loved playing cards and was passionate about gardening, laughing, dancing, cooking but most importantly she was passionate about her family. She was an active and dedicated member of the Colfax Lutheran Church. Mary is survived by her sons, Don Braaten, Tony (Mary) Braaten, and Jerry (Jeri Ann) Braaten; grandchildren, Von (Deb) Braaten, Jill Cannon, Darcy (Gary) Hover, Dena (Jim) Dobbs, Deanna (Freddie) Crandall, Ebony (Jay) Braaten-Benson, Nora (John) Braaten, Amber (Phil) Braaten- Johnson, Chelsea Braaten, and Troy (Angie) Braaten; sister, Gladys Tandberg; numerous great and great-great grandchildren and many other family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; her son, David; parents, Joseph and Barbara; and her 11 siblings. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2019, at Sampson Funeral Home, 1017 E. Railroad Ave. in Colfax. A visitation is scheduled one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Colfax. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mary’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Mary’s name to Mayo Clinic Heath Systems Hospice.
