Richard H. Johnson “Dick”, age 92, of Colfax, WI, passed away with his children by his side, at The Neighbors of Dunn County, Menomonie, WI on June 20, 2026.
Dick was born on February 17, 1934 to Harry and Adelia (Abraham) Johnson in Eau Claire, WI. He and his family lived on a farm along the Red Cedar River in Popple Creek, north of Colfax, WI. When he was very young, his father passed away, leaving his mother to run the farm and raise him and his older siblings, Glenn and Agnes.
After graduation from Colfax HS in 1952, Dick continued to farm with his mother. On October 7, 1956, he married Nancy Hill of Colfax, WI. They continued to run the same family farm until they had a barn fire in 1965. After the fire, he and his wife, Nancy and two of their children, Brian and Bonnie, moved to another farm just three miles away. There, they had two more children, Carol and Linda. Dick operated this farm, later with his son, Brian and his family, throughout the rest of his life.
Dick was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church Popple Creek. There he served on the church council for many years. For 48 years (1963-2011), he served on the Town of Grant Board, many as the board chairman. He was a supervisor on the Dunn County Board for 24 years. In addition, he served on the County Mutual Insurance Board, the Sand Creek Farmers Union Co-op Board and was a member of the Colfax FFA Alumni. Dick was proud of his service to the community, through which, he formed many lifelong friendships.
Along with his wife, Nancy, Dick treasured time with many neighbors and friends. He played dartball for the Popple Creek Church team and from a young age, enjoyed hunting on his property and fishing on the Red Cedar river where he spent much of his life.
He is survived by his children, Brian (Peggy) Johnson of Colfax, Bonnie (Ivan) Clausen of Woodville, Carol (Chris) Gorzek of Eau Claire, Linda (Greg) Stehling of Colfax; grandchildren, Brent (Carina) Johnson, Tracy (Dan) Varnes, Sara Johnson, Michael and Alexander Clausen, Ryan and Nathan Gorzek, Richard and Brooklyn Stehling; great-grandchildren, Adelia, Benjamin and Henry Johnson, Isabelle, Olivia and Emma Varnes, Jack and Maia Johnson; sister-in-law, Mary (Don) Fennie of Stoughton, WI; brother-in-law, John (Nancy) Hill of Apache Junction, AZ; many nieces, nephews, Godchildren and friends.
Preceding Dick in death were his parents, Harry and Adelia Johnson; his wife of 68 years, Nancy; brother, Glenn Johnson; sister, Agnes Curtis; brothers-in-law, E.H. Curtis, Duane Hart and Skip Hill; sisters-in-law, Lila Johnson, Alice Hart, and Wanda Hill; nephew, Vern Curtis and niece, Audra Hart.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 1 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Sampson Funeral Home, Colfax, WI. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 2 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, at St. John Lutheran Church Popple Creek, N12004, County Road W, Colfax, WI. Pastor Roger Quandt will officiate. Burial and a luncheon at the church will follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dick’s life.
